  1. Centralize a wireless access point. It shouldn’t be located in a back room or a closet away from people. Instead, place it in the middle of an open area (not a corner) where the WiFi signal can provide the highest speed possible. Also, don’t put an access point on the floor – it’s much better to place it as high as possible for the maximum signal. For the strongest signal, set the transmit power to the highest setting. However, if you’re concerned about hackers trying to access your network, you may want to lower the Wi-FI signal so someone is less likely to pick it up outside your business.
  2. Have connected access points if you have a large facility or multiple buildings. This will allow users to have a stable connection if they move from one spot to another at your business. Their smartphone, tablet, or laptop will automatically switch to an access point with the strongest connection.
  3. Secure your network. This can be a challenge if you want to have guests use your WiFi network. A good practice is having one network for your employees to share confidential company files and a separate network just for guests and customers. It’s also important to also turn on encryption such as WPA or WPA2, and avoid using WEP since it’s less secure and easier to hack. Remember to change the password so you’re not using the default password that a hacker can easily guess. Each of your WiFi networks should be fire-walled so they’re separate from your company’s servers where confidential data might be stored and keep your networking hardware updated with the latest firmware and security patches to protect your business from hackers.
  4. Try different wireless access channels when your connection is slow. If you’re in an area with a lot of WiFi networks from other businesses and homes, you may need to try a different channel that’s not as busy. Use a program or app to check the traffic on your WiFi channels to find ones that are less crowded. This can make a big difference in how fast your employees can send and receive files, access websites, and use online programs.
